The Snows of Khione: Winter Kingdom

Lisa K. Stephenson (née Jevasia)’s Christmas ballet tradition begins this holiday season. Inspired by literature, Greek mythology, and the wonder of the underwater world, The Snows of Khione: Winter Kingdom brings storytelling to life through classical ballet, original music, and theatrical performance. This unique production introduces audiences to the world of The Naida Saga, Stephenson’s fantasy tetralogy, where sea and snow kingdoms collide in a story of destiny and transformation. Discover the books, then spend Christmas with us in New York as the story unfolds on stage.

In an age where sea and shore once lived in fragile harmony, a story is told of the Modiri, beings of water and wonder who forged a sacred union with humankind. For a time, the two worlds coexisted in quiet balance, but harmony is easily broken. As fear took root in the hearts of men, the bond between land and sea was shattered. The hybrids were hunted, their trust betrayed, and the waters that once welcomed both worlds grew heavy with loss. It is from this fracture that our story begins.

ACT I — THE AWAKENING

Naida, a young hybrid of both land and sea, begins to sense a truth long hidden within her blood. Under the quiet guidance of the Watch Witch, Fanira, she is drawn toward the mysteries of her Modiri lineage and the world beneath the surface that calls to her. Visions begin to stir, and a distant presence appears, the Snow King, a figure of power and silence watching from beyond. Eager to understand, Naida turns to her sister, urging her to discover the world beneath the water and to meet Alicity, an Iris Daughter of the Sailors’ Kingdom. She longs to show her a life untouched by the rules of the shore. But her sister, bound by fear and the laws imposed upon hybrids, refuses. To leave the land is to risk everything. Alone in her longing, Naida can no longer ignore the truth unfolding around her. The Modiri are not merely forgotten; they are being silenced, their existence threatened. And so, she makes a choice. Defying the world above, Naida descends into the depths. There, she reunites with Alicity, and for the first time, she feels whole.

ACT II — THE KINGDOM BENEATH

Beneath the surface, the world unfolds in beauty and brilliance. The waters shimmer with life, and for a moment, peace feels possible. But the past does not remain buried. Kalkisis, Naida’s father, discovers her descent and follows her into the depths. His arrival unsettles the fragile balance, drawing the attention of Queen Alcmene, Alicity’s Kingdom Mother. As tensions rise, Naida and Alicity retreat, leaving the rulers to confront the truths that divide their worlds. Within the kingdom, long-held wounds resurface.

The Snow King, Khione, and his Kingdom Lady, Rudita, mourn the loss of their Iris Daughter, Toyleri, a Lorelie who once ventured to the human world in trust, only to be slain. From grief, Rudita’s desire for vengeance has grown cold and unchanging. Kalkisis, torn between two worlds, speaks of the hybrids who remain bound to the shore, those who do not choose their fate but are governed by it. To punish them, he argues, is to punish the innocent.

Yet above the surface, darker intentions stir. Queen Emmary seeks power, an Ember, a rare and sacred gem born only of the Modiri. To obtain it, she demands a sacrifice: Naida. Bound by a past agreement, her fate is no longer her own. Refusing to surrender his daughter, Kalkisis seeks sanctuary from the Snow King, hoping to find mercy in a world that has forgotten it.

ACT III — THE SHATTERING

But mercy is not what awaits him. When Kalkisis goes before the Snow King, he is met not with refuge, but with judgment. Where grief has hardened into vengeance, the Kingdom Lady acts without hesitation. The balance breaks once more. Naida feels the loss before she understands it, a fracture that echoes through her very being. In that moment of fear and sorrow, something ancient awakens within her. From the shadows that have long remained silent, a presence stirs, a force of legend, an Ushu. Bound to her, unseen yet ever-present, it rises at last. Naida understands what must be done. The land is no longer safe, nor is it hers to return to. She remains beneath the water, surrendering the life she once knew. There, she trains, she endures, and she becomes. Over time, the girl who once sought belonging is transformed into something far greater, a being of power, presence, and purpose. A Majestic Modiri.

APOTHEOSIS — THE SNOW BALLERINA

When the time comes, Naida rises not as she once was, but as something new. She is no longer divided between worlds. She carries them.

Within the world of The Naida Saga, the Snow Ballerina emerges as the embodiment of the Winter Kingdom, a presence shaped by discipline, resilience, and transformation. This is not a title given lightly. It is a role defined not only by technical excellence, but by the ability to carry story, atmosphere, and meaning through movement. It is the culmination of a journey, a becoming, and the beginning of something yet to unfold.
